It’s time to get spooky! Rachel Voncannon here, giving you a personal guide to all things Halloween in our lovely town of Huntsville.
In my opinion, Halloween is the most wonderful time of the year. I love cozying up for scary movies, hearing ghost stories around the bonfire, carving pumpkins and dressing up for costume parties. Fall fashion is my favorite, and I’m not going to deny myself of all that is pumpkin spice. Yes, I am THAT girl. The fall season makes it feel like you’re living in a different world.
Halloween is on a Wednesday this year, so you’ll need to fit in the candy and boos where you can. As we inch closer to the big day, I’m here to outline some seasonal happenings in the area that you won’t want to miss out on.
There’s always something to do at Huntsville’s historic downtown square and events are held frequently throughout the year. The square is in the middle of downtown Huntsville lined with restaurants, antique stores, bed and breakfasts, and boutiques. This is such a fun part of the year for everyone, especially in a small town like Huntsville where we live for community!
The end of the year boasts more community involvement in any town, but Huntsville is known for its end of year square events. The most popular seasonal event this time of year is the Fair on the Square. This year marked the 44th year that Huntsville has brought this community and surrounding cities together for one fun filled day. If you missed the Fair on the Square earlier this month, don’t fret! Scare on the Square has a lot to offer as well! This event features games, carnival themed rides, free food (did you catch that, FREE), shopping, and giveaways! Tricks and treats can be found at Scare on the Square on October 27th from 2:00 pm-5:30 pm. Come for the free food, but stay for the costume contest. This event is fun for all ages!
On the corner of downtown Huntsville is First United Methodist Church. Located smack dab in the middle of the square, you’ll find its yard filled with pumpkins every Halloween season. It’s so pretty! Someone is always busy turning the pumpkin patch a photo opportunity. FUMC provides a pumpkin patch to the Huntsville community as the church’s youth annual fundraiser. Everyone loves carving pumpkins into creepy Jack-o-Lanterns. It doesn’t hurt to donate to this cause while you rummage through the pumpkin patch this year!
Lastly, if you’re looking for the local’s best kept secret, there’s always Demons Road. Locals and college students have been driving down old Bowden Road toward Martha Chapel Cemetery for decades on a dare. People have reportedly experienced hand prints on their cars, being followed by spirits once they leave, and seeing floating red lights. You have to be very brave to venture down Demons Road any time of the year, but at Halloween there’s an extra thrill.
However, you spend your Halloween this year, Huntsville is sure to not disappoint. If you’re coming in for a visit, be sure to stop by my model home in Sterling Ridge for the treat of touring our gorgeous homes… no tricks here!
